Second Sight

A nice little excerpt below from David Whyte‘s poem, Second Sight. It speaks to me of what can come in a moment. Living with acute availability and attention in the moment — this is one of the themes (practices) that continues to teach me immensly these days.

You know, I remember listening to an Audible piece from Musician Alanis Morrisette. She was describing how she wrote a particular song in 15 minutes. She was describing how the song came to her and through her. But then she went on to context such a listening moment — “it was possible only because of the 40 years of living prior to those 15 minutes.”

Well, I yearn for the attentiveness. And the freedom. As many of us do. I sense that we, most of us, whether we have it in our rhetoric, our poetry, or our music — we seek clarity that enlivens meaning and purpose, individually and together, in community and profession.

I’m grateful for the inspirations near. And the peoples with whom I continue to find and create such path.

Enjoy the poem. I did and am.

Sometimes, you need the ocean light,
and colours you’ve never seen before
painted through an evening sky.

Sometimes you need your God
to be a simple invitation,
not a telling word of wisdom.

Sometimes you need only the first shyness
that comes from being shown things
far beyond your understanding,

so that you can fly and become free
by being still and by being still here.
